A customer came to us, looking for a 300GD. “Green,” he said. “Needs to be green.” Fair enough. Off we started, and while it took a couple months, we eventually found this 1984 Mercedes-Benz 300GD up in Lugo, Spain. Our inspection revealed a well-maintained, single-family owned example of Mercedes’ two-door Geländewagen. The five-cylinder diesel started easily, smoked very little, and shifted nicely down the road.
“Beautiful,” I thought.
“Not for me,” said the customer.
C’est la vie. But walking away from this beautiful little Mercedes didn’t feel like an option. I grabbed it up, eager to get my hands on another 300GD. Finished off in Cypress Green Metallic, the truck looked beautiful, with stickers lining the rear window showcasing the previous owner’s adventures. It was billed as their hunting vehicle; accumulating miles over the years as it took the owners into the mountains for an excursion. The tight checkered plaid interior was complete and original; in fact, except for a few extra gauges that had been added, the entire interior was beautifully original.
A set of new BF Goodrich Mud-Terrain TA’s were added when the truck got back to the States, giving the truck a mild lift over the stock wheels and tires, but more importantly giving it the right aggressive stance, it deserved. We hope the next owner enjoys this little W460 as much as we do.
Driveline. This truck retains its original naturally aspirated 3.0L five-cylinder diesel, mated to a five-speed transmission, high/low transfer case with center locking differential, and independent front and rear locking differentials. Drives and shifts without issue. Comfortable highway cruising speeds are about 65mph, with the ability to surge to 70mph. Odometer reads 71,000 KM, assumed to be 171,000 km, or 106,254 miles, based on overall vehicle condition. As a note, since the odometer has rolled over, the title conveys with a caveat of the odometer being in excess of mechanical limits.
Exterior. The Cypress Green Metallic paint is fresh and presents nicely. Truck is rust free; floors, outriggers, rear tail lights, and all common rust-prone areas are clean and dry. 5x new BF Goodrich Mud-Terrain KM2 tires were installed upon arrival. Lights and signals all function properly.
Interior. The interior is complete and mostly original. The tight checkered plaid upholstery on the front and rear seats presents nicely, with only a small tear in the driver’s side bolster. Seats fold forward to provide easy access to the rear seats. Aftermarket radio has been installed and works. Truck has manual locks and power front windows.
